What’s a Tequila Topo Chico?

The Tequila Topo Chico is made with tequila, lime juice, and Topo Chico water. 

Topo Chico is sparkling mineral water bottled in Monterrey, Mexico.

How to make this easy cocktail? Grab these ingredients and pour them into a glass — you’re done in 1 minute!

  • Tequila (1 ounce): any type of tequila: blanco or reposado
  • Topo Chico (6 ounces)
  • Lime wedge: from a fresh lime — don’t substitute bottled lime juice!

Is Tequila & Topo Chico a Ranch Water?

Tequila & Topo Chico is not exactly the same as a Ranch Water cocktail. Ranch water contains more lime juice. However, feel free to add lime juice to this Tequila and Topo Chico recipe to suit your taste.

  • Ranch water is a tequila highball cocktail that hails from West Texas. 
  • How to make Ranch Water? Just increase the lime in this tequila Topo Chico! Use 1 ½ ounces fresh lime juice instead of a lime wedge. It makes it even more tangy and delicious.

Tequila and Topo Chico is easy to make with simple and readily available ingredients.


  • 3 oz blanco tequila

  • 1 ½ oz fresh lime juice (about 1 shot)

  • 6 oz Topo Chico, chilled

  • Fresh lime wedge for garnish


  • Use whatever glass you have on hand—fill with ice.
  • Add tequila and lime juice.
  • Top with Topo Chico.
  • Add fresh lime wedge to the rim of the glass.


  • The amounts of tequila and lime juice can be halved to fit a smaller cocktail glass or to be less boozy in general. Just use a ratio of two parts tequila to one part fresh lime juice.
  • Use a highball or lowball glass. Just adjust the proportions to fit the size of your glass. Keep in mind the ratio is two parts tequila and one part fresh lime juice.
  • Texans say that Topo Chico is a must in a Ranch Water recipe. The sparkling water is extra-bubbly and adds sparkle to every sip.
  • The best tequila to use is a blanco (or silver). These types of tequila are clear, mild, and, most like water.
  • I use any unflavored seltzer or club soda if I can't find Topo Chico.
  • Salt or tajin on the rim or inside the drink are popular additions.
